Introduction: An examination of county records, available at the Washington State Archives in Olympia has yielded several decades’ worth of salaries for the teachers at the Yelm School. The dollar amounts are for a month’s work. The contracts were usually for three months. The district seems to have employed one teacher through 1908. Most of these teachers do not appear on census rolls for the Yelm area. The practice was for the teachers to sign a contract and rent from a local inhabitant while the term lasted. The sharp increase in the number of teachers employed is the result of the school district consolidations which took palce around te time of World War I, as Yelm absorbed some neighboring districts.
